Freedom, fireworks, and front porches

Every 4th of July, our tradition begins the same way—on the rooftop of The Chapman House in downtown Edmond. With the stars and stripes fluttering above, the LibertyFest Parade rolling below, and the crowd lining the streets in celebration, it’s a moment that always gives me pause. From there, we head to Grand Lake, where the celebration continues. We raft out on Doctor’s Orders with friends and family, sharing laughter, stories, and snacks as the lake comes alive with energy. As evening falls, it’s campfires, grilled hot dogs, and burgers—followed by the familiar hum of golf carts as we ride out to watch the fireworks light up the sky over Shangri-La Resort and reflect across the waters of Monkey Island. It’s a full day and a powerful reminder of what freedom feels like.

For me, Independence Day is more than a holiday. It’s a celebration of opportunity. A celebration of the front porch as much as the fireworks. It’s about the freedom not only to speak and believe—but to build a life, own a home, start a business, and gather in community. It’s about the backyards and balconies where we grill burgers, the sidewalks where children ride bikes, and yes, the rooftops where neighbors gather, the American flag flies, and we watch the parade go by.

This kind of freedom didn’t come easy—and it doesn’t maintain itself. Just as our nation’s founders fought for independence, we in the real estate world work every day to protect and expand the American dream. Whether it’s helping someone buy their first home, fighting for property rights, or revitalizing a downtown block, real estate is a front-line expression of our liberty.

We’re fortunate to live in a country where private property and personal opportunity are enshrined in law and culture. And it’s no coincidence that people from all over the world still choose to invest here. They see what we sometimes forget—that the freedom to own land, live where you choose, and pass something on to the next generation is one of the greatest forms of liberty.

So, this 4th of July, in between the sparklers and the boat rides, take a moment on your front porch or your dock or your deck. Look around and soak in what you’ve built, what you’re a part of, and what so many have sacrificed to make possible.
